A voice evacuation and public address (PA) system must keep working when mains power fails: backup is required both for standby mode (hours) and for alarm mode. Here is how to estimate power consumption per mode and size the battery capacity with aging and temperature factors.
Why a PA system needs its own backup power
A voice evacuation and PA system must remain operational when mains power fails — otherwise, at the very moment the announcement matters most, the system risks going silent. That is why the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) with its battery bank is sized for two modes at once: a long standby mode (the system is waiting) and a short alarm mode (the system broadcasts the message at full power).

Two consumption modes: standby and alarm
The system's current draw differs several-fold between the two modes — and that is the key to sizing the backup.
- Standby mode — only the control units and indicators are powered. The current is small, but the time is measured in hours.
- Alarm mode — the amplifiers deliver power into the loudspeakers; the current is at its maximum, but the duration is only minutes.
The final capacity is determined by the sum of the energy of both modes: the long standby period accumulates amp-hours through time, while the short alarm does so through high current. Neither mode can be ignored.
How to estimate power consumption per mode
The estimation procedure is simple and follows the same logic used by the VPA online calculator:
- add up the standby current of all devices and multiply by the required backup time in hours;
- add up the alarm-mode current (the main contribution comes from the amplifiers under load) and multiply by the broadcast time;
- add both energies in amp-hours — this is the base battery requirement before any correction factors are applied.

Aging and temperature factors (IEEE 485 guidance)
The raw amp-hour requirement must not be specified with zero margin — a real battery delivers less. Following a methodology close to IEEE 485, correction factors are applied:
- Aging — capacity drops toward the end of service life; a typical guideline is a margin of about 1.25, i.e. the design assumes an aged battery.
- Temperature — below +20 °C the delivered capacity decreases, so a temperature factor is applied.
- Depth of discharge — to avoid running the battery flat and shortening its service life.

Margins and UPS selection
Once the capacity is calculated, the battery is rounded up to the nearest standard rating, and the UPS or power supply is chosen with margin in both charging current and power. A sensible engineering margin is built into both the battery capacity and the amplifier power — alarm mode must not drag the system down.
